Share of Voice

How often AI mentions you compared to competitors

What is it?

Share of voice measures how often AI mentions your business compared to your competitors for the same queries. If there are 5 plumbers in your area and AI mentions you in 40% of relevant queries, your share of voice is 40%.

Think of it like this: if 100 people ask AI for a plumber recommendation in your city, how many of those conversations include your business name?

Why it matters

AI doesn't show 10 results like Google. It typically recommends 3-5 businesses. Share of voice tells you whether you're consistently making that short list - or being left out of the conversation entirely.

A business with 80% share of voice is getting mentioned in 4 out of 5 AI conversations about their category. Their competitor at 20% is being mentioned once. That's a 4x visibility gap.

How we calculate it

We run multiple query variations that a real customer might ask:

  • "Best [your category] in [your city]"
  • "[Your category] near me" (with location context)
  • "Who do you recommend for [your service]?"
  • "Top rated [your category] in [your area]"
  • And more variations...

We track which businesses appear in each response, then calculate the percentage breakdown.

What good looks like

0-15%

Low visibility - rarely mentioned

15-40%

Moderate - in the mix but not dominant

40%+

Strong - frequently recommended

Example

Downtown Dental discovered they had only 12% share of voice - despite having the most Google reviews in their area. Two competitors were dominating AI recommendations.

After investigating, they found their competitors had better structured data on their websites and more mentions on dental directories AI trusts. Three months of focused work brought them to 35% share of voice.
